The Levante at RM2,100 a day is our only Maserati. It occupies an unusual spot: an SUV with a genuinely rare badge in KL, priced below the Range Rover Sport SVR and the AMG GLE 53, and booked mostly by people who are tired of seeing the same three German logos.

Rarity is the real selling point. There are a lot of X5s and GLEs in the Klang Valley and comparatively few Levantes, so it stands out at a hotel forecourt or a wedding without being a supercar. The interior is Italian, not German — more leather and stitching, fewer screens, switchgear that is charming more than logical.

It seats five properly with a usable boot, which makes it a workable family car for a weekend away, and the ride at highway speed is settled and quiet. Around town it feels large but not unmanageable; it is roughly Levante-typical at about 5 metres long, so newer mall car parks are fine and older city-centre basements need a careful line on the ramp.

Fuel consumption is the thing to plan for. Expect around 13 to 15 litres per 100 km in KL traffic. That is not unusual for a performance SUV, but combined with the RM2,100 daily rate it means a week is a considered decision, not an impulse. RON 97 only.

Who books it: wedding entourages who want a second car that is not another black German SUV, businesses hosting visitors where the badge carries weight, and a steady trickle of enthusiasts who want to spend a weekend with a Maserati before deciding whether to buy one. It photographs particularly well in dark colours at dusk.

One practical caution. Italian infotainment can be idiosyncratic, and Bluetooth pairing occasionally needs a second attempt. We pair your phone at handover so you are not fighting the screen on the Federal Highway. Ask us and we will set up your Waze or Google Maps before we hand over the keys.

Availability is the other thing to plan around. We hold one Levante, so weekend dates in wedding season go early and there is no second car to fall back on. If the date is fixed, book it well ahead instead of ringing on the Thursday and hoping.

How does the Maserati Levante compare with a Range Rover?

The Levante at RM2,100 is close in price to the Range Rover Sport SVR at RM2,200 but a very different car. The Maserati is more of a road-biased SUV with a distinctive interior and a rarer badge; the SVR is faster, louder and more familiar. For off-tarmac use, neither is the answer — take the Defender.

Is the Levante suitable for a family trip out of KL?

Yes. Five adults fit comfortably, the boot takes a weekend's luggage for a family, and it is quiet and stable on the North-South Expressway. Budget for fuel at around 13 to 15 litres per 100 km and note that RON 97 is required. Tell us your route so we can set an appropriate mileage allowance.

Can you deliver the Maserati to a hotel in the city centre?

Yes, free of charge anywhere in the Klang Valley including city-centre hotels. We coordinate with the hotel's valet or concierge so the handover is not done blocking a driveway. Give us your arrival time and room or booking name and we will time the delivery to when you are actually ready for the car.
