The GTI is a 2.0-litre turbo with 245 bhp and a seven-speed DSG, front-wheel drive, five seats. On the specification sheet it is the least dramatic performance car here. In practice it is the one that suits KL best, because the limiting factor in this city is almost never engine power — it is traffic, car park widths and speed humps, and the Golf beats every other fast car in the fleet on all three.

It is the same daily rate as the Range Rover Velar, the BMW X4 and the Mercedes-AMG A35, which makes it an interesting comparison. Against those, the Golf gives up presence and gains usability and fuel economy. Expect 8 to 10 litres per 100 km in mixed driving — the best figure of any performance car we hold — on RON 97.

Who books it: enthusiasts who know exactly what a GTI is and want one for a weekend of driving up Genting or out to Fraser's Hill, expats on a month-long stay who want something fun that is also a sensible everyday car, and a steady number of people who tried something bigger last time and came back for something they could park.

Practically it is a hatchback and behaves like one. The boot swallows a week's shopping or two large cases with the rear seats up. Rear legroom fits two adults properly. Ground clearance is normal, so unmarked humps in older Petaling Jaya and Subang housing areas are a non-event — which is not true of most of our sports cars.

The monthly rate is where it makes the most sense. RM12,000 for thirty days works out at RM400 a day, less than a Honda Civic RS at the daily rate, for a considerably better car. If you are in KL for a month and want one vehicle that does everything, this is the one we would point you at first.

Is the Golf GTI a good car for a month in Kuala Lumpur?

It is our first recommendation for exactly that. RM12,000 a month works out at RM400 a day for a car that parks anywhere, seats five, carries luggage, uses 8 to 10 litres per 100 km and is genuinely enjoyable to drive. Very few cars on the fleet cover that many bases at that price.

Is the Golf GTI a manual?

No — ours has the seven-speed DSG twin-clutch automatic, so anybody with an ordinary automatic licence can drive it. If you specifically want a manual, the only two we rent are the Honda Civic Type R at RM1,300 a day and the Porsche 718 Spyder at RM1,800, both considerably more focused cars.

How does the Golf GTI compare with the Civic Type R?

The Type R has 329 bhp to the GTI's 245 and is the faster, harder car, but it is a manual, firmly sprung and impossible to be discreet in. The GTI is quieter, more comfortable, more economical and easier to live with day to day. For a weekend of driving, the Type R; for a month in KL, the GTI.
